Friday worship
Your guide to Jumu‘ah
Preparation, khutbah etiquette, the prayer and the best acts of Friday.
Who must attend?
- Jumu‘ah replaces Dhuhr for resident adult Muslim men who are able to attend; recognised exemptions include illness, danger and qualifying travel.
- Women may attend and their Jumu‘ah is valid; otherwise they pray Dhuhr. Details for other circumstances should be learned locally.
- When you miss Jumu‘ah, pray Dhuhr—do not pray two rak‘ahs alone as Jumu‘ah.
Preparation for Friday
- Perform ghusl, wear clean good clothing, use pleasant scent where appropriate and avoid offensive odours.
- Go early without pushing past people; walk calmly and fill the nearest available space.
- Recite Surah al-Kahf during Friday and increase salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Khutbah and prayer
- The imam gives the khutbah before leading two rak‘ahs aloud.
- Listen attentively and remain silent—even telling someone else to be quiet can count as idle speech.
- If you catch one rak‘ah with the imam, complete one after salam; late-arrival details should be checked with your school.
Friday opportunities
- Make abundant dua; authentic reports describe a special hour in which supplication is answered.
- Send salawat, remember Allah ﷻ and arrive with a heart free of trade and distraction.
- Use Friday to repair relationships, visit family and renew weekly worship without inventing fixed rituals.
Common mistakes
- Arriving habitually after the khutbah begins; talking, texting or distracting others.
- Stepping over people, reserving excessive space or attending with strong food or smoke odours.
- Treating one local Jumu‘ah time as universal—mosques may run multiple services with different arrangements.
