Marriage & Family

A respectful foundation for choosing, building and protecting a Muslim family.

Choosing a spouse

  • Prioritise faith, character, emotional safety, compatibility and realistic life goals—not appearance or family pressure alone.
  • Use lawful meetings, references, istikhara and honest discussion of health, finances, children and expectations.
  • Consent is essential; forced marriage is not acceptable.

Nikah

  • Nikah is a solemn covenant with clear consent, mahr and the required witnesses/guardian according to the applicable school.
  • Register the marriage legally where required to protect both spouses’ rights.
  • A wedding should avoid debt, waste, humiliation and practices that contradict clear Islamic duties.

Rights, intimacy and privacy

  • Marriage is built on tranquillity, affection, mercy, maintenance, fidelity and kind treatment.
  • Intimacy is mutual, private and never a licence for coercion, degradation or harm.
  • Do not expose a spouse’s intimate details or use religion to control or isolate them.

Communication and conflict

  • Address behaviour without contempt; listen, pause when angry and choose a safe time to talk.
  • Use trustworthy mediation when a problem persists.
  • Violence and abuse require safety planning and qualified help—not advice to simply be more patient.

Divorce basics

  • Divorce is a serious legal-religious process with waiting periods, financial rights and forms that differ in effect.
  • Do not issue or interpret talaq through an app. Contact a qualified scholar and local legal professional immediately.
  • Protect children from conflict and never use access, money or rumours as punishment.

Parenting and elderly parents

  • Raise children with love, prayer, boundaries, Islamic identity and room for age-appropriate questions.
  • Both parents carry responsibility for safety, education and emotional care.
  • Serve elderly parents with dignity while maintaining necessary boundaries and sharing care fairly.
