About Qurbani
Qurbani (udhiyah) is the sacrifice offered from after the Eid al-Adha prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah until sunset on the 13th. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to sacrifice his son, and the ram Allah provided in his place.
A sheep or goat counts as one share. A cow, buffalo or camel counts as seven, so seven people may join together in one animal. The animal must be healthy and free of obvious defects such as blindness, a pronounced limp or severe emaciation.
The meat is traditionally divided into three: one part for your household, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor. Many families now arrange Qurbani through a trusted charity that performs the sacrifice where the need is greatest.
Views differ on whether Qurbani is obligatory (wajib) or a confirmed sunnah, and on who it is due from. Follow the position of your local scholars.
